Special Programs for Women and Girls

Given the wages and costs of education in Guatemala, many families simply cannot afford to send all their children to school.  Thus, they have to choose who goes to school, and who stays home and works.  Often, it is the girls who stay home and work.

            In many families in Guatemala, all the women are completely illiterate.  However, due to death, desertion, or injury, it is now often those same women who must now support the family.  However, they simply do not have the skills to do so.

            Over the years our organization has received several grants to help alleviate the problem of education for women in Guatemala.  We used the money to help women and girls continue or begin their education.  Today, we have quite a few girls studying at the university level --- a real accomplishment when you consider that most of their mothers are functionally illiterate.

The lack of education among women in Guatemala is a burden for everyone, the men and boys, as well as the women and girls.  As more women obtain skills and education, life will be better for all.
